The Espresso Report

Home espresso, honestly

Independent espresso machine and grinder reviews.

We read the actual spec sheets, we track the actual prices, and we tell you plainly what we do and don't know about a machine.

Three things this site does that the others don't

The prices are real

Every price here comes from Amazon's API with the date we checked it — currently Jul 13, 2026. If our data goes stale, we stop showing a number rather than show you a wrong one. Most buying guides have prices typed into the prose that stopped being true years ago.

The specs are traceable

Every specification links to the manufacturer's own documentation. And when a manufacturer doesn't publish something — De'Longhi never states a portafilter size — we tell you they don't, instead of repeating a number from a parts seller.

We admit what we haven't done

We have no lab, and we haven't used these machines. Every page says so in a badge you can't miss, and we publish a table of exactly what we own. The sites above us claim thousands of test shots. You can't check a single one of those claims.

That last one costs us something, and we know it. Here's the full methodology — including the ownership table, and exactly how our scores are formed.

If you buy one thing first, buy the grinder

The Baratza Encore ESP is the default first espresso grinder we recommend — its lower dial range is dedicated to the fine espresso adjustment a shot actually needs. See all our grinder picks.

We earn a commission if you buy through a link on this page. It costs you nothing extra and it does not change what we recommend. Full disclosure.

Buy the grinder first. Yes, really.

It's the least popular advice in home espresso and the most reliably correct. A great machine cannot rescue a bad grind — but a great grinder will make a modest machine genuinely good. If you read one thing before spending money, read this.

Machine or grinder first?
